I've been watching the progress on the Vriesea simplex in the photo below for the past month.  During the last week, the 6 inflorescences have really taken off.  The first flowers may show themselves in another 2 weeks or so.  I have never had one of these, and when we were at John Arden's green houses earlier this year, I had to purchase this one.  I will post another pic when I see a flower or two.  Love species plants!

 Huh nEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SPOT DISTINCT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SCALARIS AND SIMPLEX  oops ... this is what is usually called Vr. scalaris rubra downunder ..
